Final Four Squared

Table of Contents

I was planning for this week’s newsletter to mostly preview my livestream, but we’re still ironing out the technology to stream via Juice Reel.

Because of that, I’m pushing the livestream to a later date, and today I’ll hit some quick Final Four insights, update you on my Reel National Championship progress, and close with a Final Four Bet of the Week!

Let’s get after it.

Tournament Halftime Adjustments

This pattern is both extreme and unintuitive!

Teams trailing at the half in the Sweet 16 and Elite Eight went 8-4 against the second-half spread in this year’s NCAA Tournament. Most recently, we saw Illinois and Arizona win their second halves by 16 and 22 points, respectively, last Saturday. UConn’s big comeback the next day was even more extreme.

In the Sweet 16 or later of the last two NCAA Tournaments, teams that trailed at the half are 19-8 against the second-half spread. The tournament has been full of comebacks!

I share this as a warning to anyone prone to in-game betting on teams off to a hot start: beware the halftime reversal!

UConn Against the Spread: Mixed Messages

First, the good:

Since 2023, UConn is 17-1 against the spread (ATS) in March Madness. The only team to cover against UConn was Furman this year. To build on that, as UConn’s coach, Dan Hurley is 14-0 ATS in the Round of 32 or later – the best ever. Wow.

By contrast, UConn went 15-23 ATS this season before the tournament, and no past NCAA champion has ever performed so poorly against expectations.

FWIW, I’m putting more stock in the second trend than the first, but more on that later.

The Reel National Championship Update

Your author is in the Final Four!

I pulled out a modest win over “NeverPassSports” in the Sweet 16, winning +2 units to -1u.

My most impactful bets in this round were Arizona -8 and Michigan -8.5, supplemented by some NBA player props.

As predicted, I matched up with the #1 bettor, sXeBets, in the Elite Eight, and was fortunate to catch Matt on a cold streak.

I won by 8 units, with my big hits coming in college player props (Tarris Reed breezed over 13.5 points in 22 minutes of game time).

I’m facing a tough Final Four opponent in #20-ranked Juice Reel bettor “Catch22.”

We similarly place a lower daily volume of bets, with a good hit rate, so I’ll be ready to follow the advice of my first manager as a trader: grip it and rip it.

Wish me luck!

After a quick word from this week’s sponsor, let’s get to the bets.
